It’s fall here (although it already feels like winter 🥶) and the holidays are just around the corner. I can’t believe how quickly time is passing this year, even with all the crazy COVID stuff.

Holidays can be a rough time to be on any sort of diet, am I right??? It can be especially hard for our little ones. Last year Rosie didn’t really care about not getting candy on Halloween. Unfortunately now that she’s bigger she does care. A lot. My two big kids were chatting excitedly about the candy my husband ordered for our family Halloween party and Rosie came up to me and said “I want to eat candy!”. 😬 Uh oh. I knew this was coming, so I told her about the fun treats I’m preparing for her. Even though we can’t eat the same things as everyone else, there are still exciting treats we can eat. It’s all about the presentation with holidays (and taste too).

Below are my own recipes as well as ideas I’ve found on Pinterest that are low histamine. Some ideas are simple, some are more intense, but hopefully you find at least one thing to help make your Halloween festive and tasty!

My Recipes

1. Donuts

My favorite childhood Halloween treat is my mom’s homemade spudnuts. Spudnuts are donuts made with mashed potatoes and let me tell you they are DELICIOUS! So when I converted them to GF, DF, and low histamine, I was ecstatic that they turned out so yummy. We’ll be making these on Halloween day.

Mouth-watering spudnuts. Histamine Level: 1 (due to eggs and yeast)

2. Sugar Cookies

Sugar cookie cut-outs are so fun for the holidays, because the kids always have a blast making them (even if I don’t haha). I’ve got two low histamine, gluten free recipes for you and neither of them require chill time, woot!

Key to my lime recipe: Vegan & GF. Histamine level: 0 or 1 (0 if you don’t use vanilla). I substituted 6 Tb extra light tasting olive oil for the dairy free spread. I omitted the almond extract & lowered the vanilla to 1/2 tsp. I substituted 1 TB of macadamia milk for the almond and then I added 4 Tb + 1 tsp water.

Blackberry Lollipops from Hedgecombers

Blackberry Lollipops in a jar
Histamine Level: 0. Only 2 ingredients-fruit & sugar! I tried making blueberry ones and I think they would have been delicious except I burned them… and then I decided it was probably too much sugar for Rosie anyway!

Have a Happy Halloween and Stay Safe!

P.S. We had an outdoor extended family halloween party tonight with a trunk or treat and it was SO fun. I was able to give every car a treat to hand to Rosie when she came by to trick or treat. It was a great way for her to be a part of the fun and have safe food to eat. Below is what I prepared for her with help from her older siblings:

Festive low histamine treats- vegan, GF sugar cookies, pistachios, green grapes, rice chex, kix cereal, applesauce pouch, and a “larabar“.
She was thrilled with her treats and proceeded to eat almost all of them in one sitting. Her grandparents gave her two of her favorites- popcorn and an apple!
